Living in Douliu, Taiwan

When I first moved to Douliu, I wasn’t sure what to expect. As a foreign teacher, I was assigned to work here, and I just knew one thing: I needed to live somewhere with convenient public transportation, since I can't ride a bike or drive. Thankfully, Douliu turned out to be the perfect fit.
Nestled in the central-western part of Taiwan, Douliu is the capital city of Yunlin County. It’s a small, quiet city with a relaxed pace of life, much less crowded than Taiwan's bigger cities like Taipei, Taichung, or Kaohsiung. Douliu is also unique: it’s the only county capital in Taiwan that doesn't share the same name as its county.
Even though it’s a smaller city, the public transportation is reliable and convenient compared to many rural towns in Taiwan. Douliu has a TRA (Taiwan Railways Administration) station — it's a key stop along the West Coast Line, making it easy to travel north to Taichung or south to Chiayi and Tainan. Buses also connect Douliu to nearby towns and cities.
Douliu has a subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters, and occasional typhoons in the summer and fall. When I arrived, it was winter, and I wasn’t prepared. The clothes I packed were all for summer. I had to buy some warmer clothes, and my principal, being so kind, even gave me a few.
Luckily, I come from one of the coldest towns in the Cordilleras in the Philippines, so the cold weather doesn't really bother me. Still, hot coffee became my winter staple!
